چکیده

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are waterborne pathogens commonly found in building water systems where they a primary concern to vulnerable patient populations and can cause severe disease. The recovery of NTM from environmental samples be laborious undertaking current pre-treatment methods selective media lack sensitivity. We explored the use highly Rapidly Growing Mycobacteria (RGM) medium for culturing compared existing methods. In total, 223 samples, including potable non-potable water, were cultured using three culture media. addition direct on RGM medium, each sample was Middlebrook 7H10 Mitchison 7H11 after with 0.2M KCl-HCl. Occurrence of nontuberculous mycobacteria in environmental samples.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a major cause of opportunistic infection in immunocompromised hosts. Because there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission and NTM have been found in drinking water, the environment is considered a likely source of infection. In this study the widespread occurrence of NTM was examined in drinking water, bottled water, and ice samples. A total of 139...

Comment on “Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Isolation from Clinical and Environmental Samples in Iran: Twenty Years of Surveillance”

A review of 20 studies and 14 case reports published in a recent issue of the journal from 14 provinces in Iran on clinical and environmental isolates of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) showed M. fortuitum (229/997; 23%) as the most prevalent species from 1992 to 2014 [1]. The majority of NTM were collected from respiratory samples. The primary method of NTM detection was by culture using the...

Optimized Method for Isolation of Nontuberculous Mycobacteria from Hospital Aquatic Sources

Background: Aquatic ecosystems are an important source of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) that can cause different diseases in human. Since culture of mycobacteria needs long-term incubation, fast-growing microorganisms and contaminants in the environment usually prevents the isolation of mycobacteria. Here, we compare different treatment protocols and describe a method that increases the rec...

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Isolation from Clinical and Environmental Samples in Iran: Twenty Years of Surveillance

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens that are widely distributed in the environment. There is a lack of data on species distribution of these organisms from Iran. This study consists of a review of NTM articles published in Iran between the years 1992 and 2014. In this review, 20 articles and 14 case reports were identified. Among the 20 articles, 13 (65%) studies focus...

Evaluation of procedures for isolation of nontuberculous mycobacteria from soil and water.

Six methods of decontamination each for the isolation of mycobacteria from soil and water were compared. On the basis of the results obtained, three of the six methods for soil and two of the six methods for water were further evaluated. For both soil and water samples, the method using 3% sodium lauryl sulfate in combination with 1% NaOH yielded more positives than the other methods.
